There is a true story recently about a meteorologist in New York, that was caught lying on his resume after he was hired. According to the reports, when confronted about his meteorology degree, he finally admitted that he was “a few credits short” and that the viewers and the station demanded more, so they fired him. In reality, he just plain lied about his degree and was hired by the station, who conducted a background check. So why did they still hire him when they didn’t have the information up front? Well, unfortunately a lot of background check services take a while in finding records and often will work a case for weeks or even up to a month before they give final results. Imagine the damage that can be done by one employee that is not qualified after being hired and put in charge of difficult decisions.
An educational background check is in most cases, instant if not one day out. There should be no excuse for any background check on an educational record, criminal record or civil record to take an extended amount of time unless there are exceptional circumstances surrounding the case such as a child involved where the information may be sealed or redacted. The fact that over 50 percent of applicants either lie or withhold information on resumes are a clear indication that background services need to do a clear, and credible background check in a timely manner so that the employer can make the best decision and protect their assets and employees.
